With food and family gatherings right around the corner, now is a great time to be a DoorDash driver … or is it? If you’re wondering how much dashers are earning in 2021, you’re in the right place.

Let’s cut to the chase.

According to our data collected from 150,000+ Gridwise drivers, from July through September 2021, DoorDash drivers earned an average of $15.04 per hour and $7.74 per trip.

Those numbers are down slightly from the $15.60 per trip on average drivers made earlier in the year.

The pandemic has caused constant fluctuations in earnings for both rideshare and delivery drivers. These changes make it hard to predict what DoorDash driver earnings will look like in the future.

The increased demand for food delivery has led many restaurants to take to the DoorDash platform or list their meals on these lesser-known food delivery platforms

But of course, hourly and per-trip earnings are only part of the story. To maximize your earnings as a DoorDash driver in 2021, it’s also worth asking:

  • What can I do to improve DoorDash earnings?
  • Should I switch to drive for DoorDash?

What can I do to improve my DoorDash earnings?

Getting the most out of your “Dash” time isn’t just luck. There are real strategies drivers can use to increase their earnings.

Start with goal-setting. How much do you want to earn per hour? How many hours a week do you want to work? Clearly defining these goals is the only way to benchmark your earnings and refine your strategy.

Knowing what you need/want to get out of your working time also helps you be more selective with orders. Will you take a $5 fast-food order? If you’re only in your first half-hour of the four that you scheduled, it’s probably better to wait for a higher-value option. It’s important to know how to pick the right deliveries

Don’t be afraid to go big with your goals. It’s not impossible for drivers to earn up to $1000 a week with DoorDash. Not bad for being your own boss.

It also helps to know when to drive. Food delivery is even more rush-driven than rideshare, but that doesn’t always mean the rush is the best time to be on the road. Think about this: is a big dinner order worth it if you’re stuck in heavy traffic for an hour?
Thankfully, you don’t have to guess the best time to drive. The Gridwise when to drive feature uses up-to-date driver data to show you when drivers are making the most (and the least) at different times of the day. This helps you know when you’re on the road to higher earnings.

Gridwise can help you figure out where to drive, too. The Gridwise where to drive feature also pulls earnings data from all of our users to let you find the hotspots in your location (currently available in select cities). Now you don’t have to waste time moving from neighborhood to neighborhood trying to figure out which one has the highest demand. Get the information you need and start earning.

Along with showing demand, the Gridwise app also provides:

  • Up-to-date travel information on flights;
  • Real-time traffic alerts;
  • Gas deals: Save up to $0.25 per gallon with Gridwise Gas;
  • The most current information on events happening in your city.

Should I switch to drive for DoorDash?

Moving from rideshare to delivery depends on you, so the best place to start is by doing some research on what each app has to offer. Here’s how much drivers are making with Uber and Instacart, and an overall look at the rideshare industry

It’s going to come down to you, your area, and the type of driving you want to do. Where and when you’re on the road have the biggest impact on how much you’ll earn.

And you’re not alone. More and more people are making the switch to the gig economy despite the lack of fringe benefits (or PTO). For many, the ability to work where and when you want more than makes up for it.

If you’re ready to join them, you can sign up to be a DoorDash driver today to diversify your income and earn more as a driver.

Whether you choose rideshare, delivery, or become a multi-apper, always drive with Gridwise on your side. Apart from knowing where and when to drive, you’ll also get access to exclusive driver benefits and the most comprehensive support for gig drivers.
