Shipt Partners with Walgreens and 7-Eleven: Good News for Shipt Shoppers?

Shipt hit the scene in 2014, offering drivers another option for delivery gigs. In 2017, Shipt’s delivery business exploded when the company was purchased by Target for $550 million.

Now there’s a new partnership on the way as Shipt announced it is partnering with Walgreens and 7-Eleven for 2022 — growing its already large product offering that goes well beyond standard food or grocery delivery apps.

As a driver, here’s what you should know:

One Big Thing: Shipt is growing

Shipt’s partnership with Target in 2017 increased its nationwide store coverage by 40 percent. Since then, Shipt’s growth has been steady with the company adding an additional 1,000 stores in 2021.

Shipt’s new partnership with 7-Eleven and Walgreens will add another 12,000+ stores and 25,000 products to the Shipt marketplace.

This will increase their already massive product offering that includes: snacks, dairy, alcohol, pantry, pet supplies, home goods, kitchen & dining, deli, beauty, electronics, toys, school and office supplies, sporting goods & outdoor, entertainment, patio & garden, gift & party, and international.

You get the picture – it’s a lot. But what does this mean for drivers?

Is 2022 a good time to become a Shipt Shopper?

Working as a Shipt Shopper in 2022 could be a good move for your gig delivery business.

Not only do Shipt’s new partnerships with Walgreens and 7-Eleven increase its reach to include nearly 80 percent of US households across 300 metropolitan areas – but Walgreens and 7-Eleven are also pitching in on Shipt promotional campaigns to bring more users to the platform.

All of this is likely to drive up demand and offer more opportunities for Shipt Shoppers to earn in 2022. It may also offer new opportunities to drivers who were previously working outside of Shipt service areas.

But demand is only half the equation; it’s also important to know how much Shipt Shopper pay might change in 2022.

Shipt’s payment structure is a base of $5 per order, plus an additional 7.5 percent of the order total. Shipt drivers also get to keep 100 percent of any tips they earn. Drivers are not paid based on distance, wait time, or other factors that some other delivery gigs include.

In 2021, Shipt advertised that drivers could make “up to $22 per hour.” Data collected from thousands of Gridwise drivers showed average Shipt earnings were between $17.26 and $19.81 per hour.

Since more stores and more products means more deliveries, and since drivers are paid per delivery, it’s possible that Shipt Shopper pay will increase in 2022 and hopefully get closer to the $22/hour claim.

One last thing: Which is better, Shipt or Instacart?

Here’s the good news, both Shipt and Instacart offer drivers higher earnings than rideshare drivers on average. And driver earnings per trip are comparable between both apps.

January 2020–April 2021Avg. Earnings Per HourAvg. Earnings Per Trip
Shipt$18.15$19.22
Instacart$15.27$20.71

One area where Instacart might take a slight lead is in the bonuses it offers shoppers for “effort involved in shopping and delivery.” Yes, that’s vague, but it could earn you more on heavy or bulky deliveries.

If you want a more thorough comparison of the two companies, we’ve already done a complete breakdown of Instacart vs. Shipt. And if you really want to find out which app is better for your business, always drive with Gridwise
